Common fabrics
Fiber content labels are required on many textiles under the FTC's textile labeling rules, which helps identify what you have.
- Microfiber (polyester): durable; often S or W/S
- Cotton and linen: can shrink or water-stain
- Wool blends: sensitive to heat and alkalinity
- Velvet: pile crushes easily
- Leather: needs leather-specific care, not fabric cleaners
Routine care
- Vacuum weekly with an upholstery tool
- Rotate and flip cushions
- Keep furniture out of direct sun
- Use throws where pets sit
Treating a stain
- 1Blot with a white cloth.
- 2Check the code.
- 3Test the cleaner on a hidden area.
- 4Apply lightly to the cloth, not the fabric.
- 5Blot, then rinse lightly if water-safe.
- 6Dry with airflow.
Important: Water on an S-coded fabric can leave rings that are difficult to remove.
