Before you hire a carpet cleaner

Most red flags show up before work begins: a price that seems too low, a vague description of what is included, promises that every stain will come out, or answers that don't add up. Here is what to watch for and what to ask.

Why a little research helps

Carpet cleaning prices and practices vary widely across San Diego. Most companies do honest work, but a few common patterns can lead to disappointing results or a bill that is higher than expected. Knowing them makes it easier to compare options fairly.

Unrealistically low pricing

A very low advertised price — for example, a whole house for the cost of one room — may not include the services most homes need. The total can grow once a technician arrives and recommends extras. Ask what the advertised price actually covers.

Vague service scope

A clear quote says which rooms, furniture or surfaces are included, which method will be used and which treatments cost extra. If a company can't describe the scope, it is hard to compare quotes or know what you are paying for.

Guaranteed stain removal

No one can honestly guarantee that every stain will disappear. Dyes, bleach, sun fading and permanent damage may only lighten. A cleaner who promises otherwise before seeing the stain is setting expectations that may not be met.

Aggressive upselling

Recommendations for pet treatment, protection or extra passes can be legitimate. Pressure to decide on the spot, or add-ons presented as mandatory without explanation, is a reason to slow down and ask why they are needed.

Unclear credentials

Ask whether the firm is IICRC certified and whether technicians are trained, insured and background-checked. A reputable company can answer directly and explain how its people are trained.

Weak or inconsistent review history

Look at reviews on more than one platform, such as Google and Yelp. A long, consistent history of detailed reviews is more meaningful than a handful of recent ratings.

Poor communication

Missed calls, unclear arrival windows or no explanation of the process before work starts are early signs of how the rest of the job may go.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • Is your firm IICRC certified, and are technicians insured and background-checked?
  • What cleaning method and equipment do you use?
  • What exactly does the price include, and what costs extra?
  • Which stains are likely — and unlikely — to come out?
  • Will you walk through the results with me before you leave?

How we handle it

We do a walk-through first, quote on-site for accuracy and transparency, explain realistic results and finish with a final walkthrough.
