Know your surface
The Tile Council of North America publishes tile installation and care information; the Natural Stone Institute offers stone care guidance.
| Surface | Care notes |
|---|---|
| Glazed ceramic | Durable surface; grout is the weak point |
| Porcelain | Dense, low absorption |
| Marble, limestone, travertine | Acid-sensitive; pH-neutral only |
| Granite, slate | Generally durable; still avoid harsh acids |
| Unglazed / Saltillo | Porous; often needs sealing |
Why grout darkens
Cement-based grout is porous. Mop water carries soil into grout lines, and over time it darkens. Mopping with dirty water or too much product makes it worse.
What to avoid
- Vinegar or acidic cleaners on natural stone (can etch).
- Bleach on colored grout.
- Steel wool on glazed tile.
- Mixing chemicals.
Important: Acids etch marble, limestone and travertine. Test any product in a hidden area.
Professional cleaning and sealing
- 1Inspect tile and stone type.
- 2Apply surface-appropriate cleaner.
- 3Agitate grout lines.
- 4High-pressure rinse and extraction.
- 5Dry and apply grout sealer where appropriate.
Everyday care
- Sweep or vacuum before mopping.
- Use clean water and a pH-neutral cleaner.
- Dry wet areas.
- Reseal grout periodically.
