Simple solutions for spots
| Solution | Use for | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Cool plain water | Fresh spills of most kinds | Blot, don't rub |
| Few drops clear dish soap in warm water | Food, soil | Rinse well — soap residue attracts dirt |
| White vinegar diluted with water | Some light odors | Test first; not for all fibers |
| Enzyme cleaner | Pet urine and organic stains | Follow label dwell times |
Important: Never mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar. Avoid bleach on carpet entirely — it removes color permanently.
The residue problem
Most DIY problems come from too much product. Soap left in the pile is sticky; it attracts soil, so the spot reappears darker within weeks. CRI recommends using small amounts of cleaner and blotting rather than rubbing (CRI).
Rental machines: pros and cons
Tip: If you rent a machine, use less detergent than the label suggests and do a plain-water rinse pass.
