The steps
| Step | What happens | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection | Check fiber, stains, wear, pet areas | Choose chemistry and set expectations |
| Dry soil removal | Vacuum where needed | Most soil is dry particulate |
| Pre-treatment | Apply soil-specific solution | Break down oily, bonded soil |
| Agitation | Brush or groom solution in | Loosen soil from fibers |
| Extraction | Hot-water rinse with strong suction | Remove soil and solution |
| Post-spotting | Treat remaining spots | Address what's left |
| Grooming | Set the pile | Even drying and appearance |
| Drying | Airflow, furniture tabs | Prevent wicking and odor |
Why dwell time matters
Pre-treatment needs a few minutes to work. Rushing it means more soil stays bonded to fibers. CRI describes soil types and cleaning as part of its maintenance guidance.
Your part
- Point out problem spots and what you've applied.
- Keep pets and kids clear of hoses.
- Run airflow afterward.
