The ten mistakes
| Mistake | What happens | Do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Scrubbing stains | Spreads stain, frays fibers | Blot from outside in |
| Too much soap | Sticky residue, fast resoiling | Tiny amounts, rinse with water |
| Over-wetting | Wicking, slow drying, odor | Light application, extract well |
| Mixing chemicals | Dangerous fumes | One product, follow label |
| Using bleach | Permanent color loss | Avoid on carpet |
| Skipping vacuuming | Grit wears fibers | Vacuum before and regularly |
| Ignoring drying | Musty smell, mold risk | Fans, AC, ventilation |
| Waiting too long | Embedded soil, wear | Periodic professional cleaning |
| Furniture on damp carpet | Rust or wood stains | Use tabs until dry |
| Hiring on price alone | Residue, upsells | Compare method and inclusions |
Important: Never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar or other cleaners — it can release toxic gases.
Why residue is the big one
Leftover detergent is sticky and attracts soil. It's why spots reappear darker and carpet seems to get dirty faster after a poor cleaning. CRI advises using small amounts of cleaner and blotting (CRI).
