Typical drying time
Most carpet cleaned with truckmount hot-water extraction feels slightly damp afterward and dries over several hours. Thick or dense carpet, humid days and closed-up rooms take longer; thin carpet in a well-ventilated room on a dry day dries faster.

How to speed drying
- 1Turn on ceiling fans and set portable fans to blow across the carpet.
- 2Run air conditioning, which also removes moisture from the air.
- 3Open windows if the outdoor air is dry — on foggy coastal mornings, keep them closed and use AC instead.
- 4Keep interior doors open to let air circulate.
- 5Limit foot traffic until the carpet feels dry.
What to avoid while carpet is damp
- Putting furniture back without foil or blocks under the legs.
- Walking on it with outdoor shoes.
- Letting pets sleep on damp areas.
- Laying rugs or towels on top, which traps moisture.
Tip: Wear clean socks rather than going barefoot on damp carpet — skin oils can transfer onto freshly cleaned fibers.
When drying takes too long
Carpet that is still wet after a day, smells musty or feels wet down to the backing should be checked. The EPA's brief guide to mold and moisture notes that wet materials should be dried within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth. Normal cleaning shouldn't leave carpet that wet; if it does, call your cleaner.
