How this guide differs
Our other San Diego guides cover local conditions that affect carpet and carpet types. This one is purely about timing — what to do, and when.
The San Diego carpet care calendar
| Season | Main challenge | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Soil from winter rain; May gray humidity | Deep clean; check entry mats |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Beach sand, guests, kids home | Frequent vacuuming; spot treatment |
| Fall (Sep–Nov) | Santa Ana dust, wildfire smoke days | Air filters; pre-holiday cleaning |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Rain, mud, holiday spills | Entry mats; prompt spill response |
Spring: reset after the wet season
Rain tracks in mud and fine soil, and damp months slow drying. Spring is a natural time for a full professional deep clean. If you're cleaning near the coast during May gray or June gloom, plan for extra airflow.
Summer: sand and high traffic
- Shake out beach towels and bags outside.
- Vacuum entries several times a week — sand is abrasive.
- Treat sunscreen and drink spills quickly.
- Close blinds during peak sun to slow fading.
Fall: dust and smoke
Santa Ana winds can push fine dust indoors, and smoke days can leave odors in soft surfaces. Change HVAC filters and vacuum more often. If smoke odor lingers, see our smoke odor guide. Fall is also when many people book cleaning ahead of holiday guests — schedule early.
Winter: wet entries and holiday spills
- Add absorbent mats inside every door.
- Remove wet shoes at the door.
- Blot wine, gravy and candle wax promptly — don't rub.
- If a leak or flood soaks carpet, act quickly: see water damage restoration.
How often to book professional cleaning
CRI recommends regular vacuuming and periodic professional deep cleaning (CRI). Many San Diego households book once a year; households with pets, kids or heavy traffic often book twice — commonly spring and fall.
SoCal Steam Clean provides truck-mounted hot-water extraction with IICRC-certified technicians. Book carpet cleaning or build a quote.
