Blot, never scrub
Scrubbing pushes the spill deeper into the pile and frays the fibers, which leaves a dull patch even after the color is gone. Press a clean white cloth straight down, lift, and repeat with a fresh section of cloth.
Work from the outside in
Start at the edge of the spot and move toward the center so the spill does not spread into clean fibers. Rinse with a little cool water, blot dry, and weigh a folded towel over the area to draw out what is left in the padding.
Common spills
- Coffee and tea: blot, rinse with cool water, repeat — heat sets the tannins.
- Red wine: blot immediately and keep the area damp with cool water until it can be treated.
- Pet accidents: blot thoroughly, rinse, and plan on an enzyme treatment — odor lives in the padding, not the surface.
- Grease and oil: absorb with baking soda first, vacuum, then treat the residue.
- Ink: dab gently with a cloth; never pour solvent directly onto the carpet.
When a spot keeps coming back
A spot that reappears days later usually means residue is still in the padding and is wicking upward as the carpet dries. That one needs hot water extraction rather than another round of spot cleaner.
