Stop the water and stay safe
Shut off the supply at the fixture or the main valve before anything else. If water is anywhere near outlets, panels, or appliances, leave the power off in that area and stay out until it is safe.
- Close the main water valve if the source is not obvious.
- Keep children and pets out of the affected rooms.
- Treat sewage or storm water as contaminated — do not handle it yourself.
Move what you can, quickly
Furniture legs stain carpet as they sit in water, and cardboard boxes wick moisture upward. Lift what is light, and put foil or wood blocks under legs you cannot move.
- Lift rugs off wet carpet so dyes do not transfer.
- Raise electronics, books, and documents first.
- Open interior doors and drawers so air can move.
Why a mop and shop vac usually is not enough
Surface water is only part of the problem. Moisture travels into carpet padding, along baseboards, and into the subfloor, where it keeps feeding warping, staining, and microbial growth long after the floor feels dry to the touch. Truck-mounted extraction, dehumidification, and moisture readings are what confirm a structure is actually dry.
